Series 2 – Social Search

Living in the time of web2.0 it has become obvious, that solutions whose contents are qualified by users themselves are very powerful. Basic techniques therefore are social bookmarking and tagging. In connection with the improvement of search solutions we talk about “social search”.

An example

Searching for the current certificate of ISO 9001 on the fileserver, you easily become desperate. Colleagues copy all documents for announcements and projects into one folder. So you find a lot of relevant documents, although if you want to work on the original, which has been updated often in the meantime.

Experienced users will find the appropriate file in spite of a long result list. By using inter:gator, all employees are provided with this expertise. When a user found a document, that is important to him and he will use again, it can be bookmarked as “favorite” in the result list by clicking on the star right at the hit preview.

Matching terms are shown as tag proposals at the appropriate dialogue. The user can add an additional comment.

Double benefit occurs by bookmarking and tagging the search result. The document is listed in users’ favorites and can be shown at an appropriate widget on the dashboard. Furthermore the document will be displayed during next search for "zertifikat iso" in an automatically shown group of tag documents at the beginning of the hit list – and from this all other users will benefit, when using one of the tags in their query.

The highlight of this solution: Indexes or indexed data sets from data bases as well as files can be marked as favorites. The integration of these functions into inter:gator widened the field of applications and so our enterprise search is no longer limited to enterprise2.0 applications.
